Barok, an Acidel, had been captured by the Spiderons previously and had been transformed to look like them. The transformation was not a complete success. Now, he no longer looks like them; but does not look like the Acidel either. He is forced by the Spiderons to assist in gaining entrance for them to the Citadel. Will Barok be able to gain access to the Citadel and will his beloved Schroomy recognize him? Gunther has his own agenda and is determined to use the Acidel to get what he wants.

Just like the other books in the trilogy, this is full of action and adventure. The author has weaved a tale of war, betrayal, deceit, evil. love and forgiveness that is fast paced and full of action until it reaches its awesome conclusion. Princess Becki is just as evil and deceitful as she has been. Barok attempts to make amends for all the misery he has caused. Gunther is evil and has his own agenda and will stop short of nothing to get what he wants. Just like real life, the underdog are the ones to suffer the most when those who are in control, use them for their own gain. If you are into science fiction, I highly recommend this book along with The Eye of the Storm Book 1 and Barok's Exodus Book 2. This is a fantastic trilogy that is sure to please.

Herald Thompson is in New York City on a special assignment for Sillian Industries. He is brought there to study the existence of vampires. He assumes he will prove they do not exist and there is some difficulty in getting him to believe that they do exist. He and many new colleagues will be studying them for the next year. Over the course of the next year, Herald will have to rethink everything he has believed to be true.

This is a second book in the larger Redgold series. The initial book, Demon Vampire, is quite involved and lengthy. It is important to read that book before reading this one. This story is interesting and very well written. It goes through some of the history of the the vampires and the blood work showing how and why they are different and live a longer existence. There is also two off shoots, if you will, to the story, in which I assume will be further pursued in later books. One involves a young woman who is not a vampire at the time of the story, and the other is with Herald himself. I will be very anxious to see where the story goes from here. Since this is a novella, the story moved faster and pulled me in from the beginning. Herald is a very likable character. Even though he is a bit shy and a loner, he is definitely a male when it comes to one of the subjects in the study. Eada catches his eye from the start and he has difficulty relaxing around her. All in all an excellent read and I highly recommend it. If you read Demon Vampire, you definitely want to read this one.

The crew is concerned; but Colonel John Mitchell is more concerned with maintaining radio contact for his upcoming interview with BBC on Earth. Not long after the first anomaly occurs, more occur, and the ship is plunged back in time to 1832.

They are captured and held by the First Lord, Lord Desbois, who is a fanatic that is interested in power and is convinced he is doing everything in the name of God. He accuses the crew of being spies and saboteurs and forces them to show him their knowledge from the future in an attempt to gain control of the world. He uses the knowledge of the future in an attempt to become the reigning power and has no problem with destroying anything or anyone in his path.

This is a fast reading novella that will make you cringe at the craziness of this man and the way he justifies everything in the name of God. It is scary in the respect that you are able to see what happens when power, money, greed, and technology get in the hands of the wrong person. Especially one who has no idea what he may be unleashing. For that matter, does not care. The storyline was fast paced, but flowed nicely through the eyes of Sarah Phillips, the only female crew member on board the space station. Lord Desbois is a despicable man who puts Hitler to shame. He is not only a bigot; but has no remorse for anything he does. If you are into Steampunk, this is a definite read for you. This was actually my first attempt at Steampunk and I would not be averse to reading more. I just would not make a steady diet of it.

Gwen calls Jack following the attempt on her live and goes to pick him up. They check into a flea bitten hotel and Jack's world as he knows it will no longer be the same. After Gwen is finished with her story of who and what she is, Jack is on shaky ground to say the least. Will he be able to trust the woman he fell in love with or will there always be doubts in his mind?

This is a fast paced read full of murder, betrayal, deception and industrial espionage. Gwen gets back into her training mode and sets out to solve the case of who tried to murder her. A local cop has his eyes set on a promotion and is determined to bring Gwen down in the process. This part could have been left out of the story because the story moved so quickly that it almost didn't work. The story in and of itself was a great read and I highly recommend it. The only real deterrant for me was the massive number of chapters for such a fast moving book. It kinda took away from the flow. Gwen is an awesome character and a strong woman that you just have to love. Jack had difficulty dealing with his new found knowledge of his wife. Understandable. He eventually gets caught up in it all and becomes a major supporter. If you like a fast moving, suspenseful story that will keep you guessing until the end, you won't go wrong with this one.

Amy Thomas is offered a dream job of going to Paris to write ad copy for Louis Vuitton. Even though she has been to Paris before and loves the city, living and working there for an extended period of time is different story. She finds herself a thirty-six year old woman trying to fit in the dating scene in a foreign country where life is just so totally different from New York. Compound that with the fact she is having difficulty mastering the language and she has a real identity crisis. Her saving grace is her love of all things sweet. She travels all over the city and beyond to savor and feed her addiction and cravings.

This is a wonderfully written memoir of Amy's adventures in Paris with her job at Louis Vuitton and her sampling of sweets during her time there and when she returns to New York for visits. There was not actually alot represented about her ad job with Louis Vuitton. The major portion of the book was her exploring different desserts at various establishments and her new found treasures of sweets. She went into great detail describing them almost with orgasmic descriptions. Sadly, I found nothing that I would just have to sample. Even though I like desserts, I am a very plain dessert person so nothing actually appealed to me. Although very well written descriptions, I found myself glossing over them at times because there was just so much.

In amidst her sweet cravings, she gives us personal insights into her dating fiascoes and her difficulty in trying to fit in with the language barrier and lack of friends. The storyline is well written and contains a wealth of information considering the length of the book. I had little problem with the storyline except with such lengthy dessert descriptions, it became a bit wordy. I would have liked to seen a key for all the French phrases because I had no clue as to what they meant.

Something I found quite unique was a listing of all the New York and Paris bakeries at the end along with addresses and phone numbers. The book also contains a map of Paris and New York with the bakeries shown with various desserts depicting location along with a written key telling the reader their names. Very appealing in my eyes. If you enjoy reading memoirs or just like a good story, I most definitely recommend this book. If nothing else, you will be craving desserts and the descriptions alone will have you bouncing off the walls. I think I gained ten pounds just reading about them.

Riley ends up on the receiving end when Karim Rashid makes him a proposition that he cannot refuse if he wants to keep his wife alive.

Riley is forced to be a player in a twisted game of Russian Roulette in Las Vegas. There are six players, six side die, and six chamber gun with one bullet. Players had to roll the die and the number that comes up is the number of times the trigger is pulled. The survivor of three rounds wins the big cash prize.

This was a gripping tale of suspense and murder that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Each contestant was given a chapter so the reader knew why that person was in the game. The storyline was very well written and flowed nicely from the beginning to the end. It was one of those stories where once you start reading, you have to continue because you want to know what will happen next. Riley was a piece of work at times and you could still see and hear the con in him. He appears to truly love his wife and is determined to do whatever it takes to save her. The question is, will he get to her in time? If you enjoy a story full of suspense and twists and turns, you will definitely like this one.

She is not sure how Jack will react to her arriving because he is technically her ex-husband's friend. She need not fear because Jack is more then happy to see her. He has difficulty staying at arm's length because he is feeling chemistry for her and he is afraid it is too soon after the divorce.

Jack is a widow and has decided it is time to move on. Anne was friends with his former wife so she knows that Jack is a Dom. She asks him to teach her about BDSM and the story flies from there. Anne is a bit leery when the teaching begins; but she trusts Jack and is willing to do whatever he asks. As things heat up, Anne realizes she is falling for Jack so she gets scared and leaves without a word. The Dom side takes over and Jack goes after her. He has a special surprise for her on Valentine's Day. If she thinks she can get away so easily, she is sadly mistaken.

This is a short, fast read that sucks you in from the get go. For such a short read, the storyline is well written and developed. The characters are both endearing, especially Jack. The basics of BDSM and the toys of the trade are introduced. If reading about BDSM is offensive to you, then don't read the book. If you like your storyline a bit risque with Doms, slaves, and toys, then you will definitely like this one. I highly recommend it.

This is a wonderful young teen story that is also quite suitable for adults. The Redneck in the title is not used in a derogatory manner; but is used as a term of respect. The young teens in this story are all handicapped in one form or another; but are fearless in their determination. They have also developed their own way of handling the bullies and take it in stride. Not only are there bullies towards the kids; but there are adults who are bullies in their own right. There are the rich who use their power to intimidate the poor and use them to get richer. The storyline is well written and flows nicely. The author has used a mix of history, a societal issues, mystery, and the paranormal to give the reader an awesome read. If you are into young teen reads and the paranormal, or just like a good story, I highly recommend this book.

   Eve Applegate gets a new neighbor who is absolutely gorgeous. She considers herself a bit unattractive and over- weight so she becomes extremely tongue-tied around him. Theodore Baldwin is not quite what he appears to be. His mission, if you will, is to bring Eve into her "Realization" because the fate of the world is depending on it. According to the Mayan calender, this all must happen before the end of the countdown year of 2012. If not, could the world have the same doomed fate of "Atlantis."
   Eve is just trying to make a better life for herself by working and going to school. Her world is suddenly turned upside down when Theo comes on the scene. He leads her to believe he is writing a book and asks her to read chapters that he has written. This is all in an attempt to win Eve's trust and lead her in the direction she needs to go. Whenever Eve's apartment blows up, she finds herself on a journey that she has a difficult time believing. Can Theo truly be who and what he says he is?
   This is an extremely interesting and fascinating book. The author weaves lots of the Mayan calender history and events into the story through Theo's "book." I found this to be quite unique in the way it was presented. Even though I found it fascinating, I became bogged down sometimes because I really had no clue as to what the history was actually telling me. This in no way, however, deterred from the story. Theo sounds like the kind of man that dreams are made of. Eve has a rather poor self-esteem issue so she is actually insecure. A bit of a loner, she relishes the attention she receives from Theo. During their travels together, Eve grows and becomes more secure in the woman that she truly is. There is obviously some chemistry between these two; but it is not until close to the end that we discover why Theo is fighting it. The storyline is well written and flows nicely throughout. If you enjoy stories that are a bit out of the ordinary, you will surely enjoy this one. I highly recommend it.

Garrison, a retired CIA operative decides to confiscate over ten million dollars that was earmarked for a rebel band preparing to overthrow the dictator of an African country. He has been using US money for years to support rebels in foreign countries. The CIA has no idea where all the money goes and no one checks into any of it. Between Garrison and his wife, they device a plan to hide the money and the means to get it fairly easily if they have need of it. His wife, Louisa, eventually decides she wants to use the money for doing good and does not always consider all angles when she comes up with the ideas.

Eventually, the rebels who were to get the money, start making noises and insisting on their money. The CIA becomes involved and Noah convinces them that someone within stole the money. Eventually, the bad guys come knocking on the door, and Louisa is suddenly gone. Now Garrison is left to care for their adopted Downs son, Noah. Having been gone most of their married life and their son's growing up years, Garrison has no clue as to how to care for Noah. Now in his twenties and developing Alzheimers, he finds himself totally out of his league. The only thing he is certain of, he must make plans for Noah in case he should die.

This book is told in the first person and goes from the time Garrison and Louisa get married and how they find themselves with an adopted son with Downs Syndrome. This is a very interesting story and full of adventure and intrigue. There are some parts that drone on a bit too much when they are going back and forth out of the country in an attempt to juggle the money. Garrison is a great character but he is pretty clueless when it comes to being a family man because he is seldom, if ever around. His wife Louisa, is a bit self righteous and gets a tad nerve racking when she wants the money to go to charities in massive quantities. It is like she does not think things through; but is determined to have her way. She is extremely over protective of Noah; but obviously loves him fiercely. This tends to cause some tension between her and Garrison on occasion. All in all, this was a very good story and I highly recommend it.

Does your writing style change much from writing a romance to one involving BDSM?

The simple answer is, yes, it does. Although the biggest difference, writing wise, for me between Finding Anna and my romantic suspense novels is that my BDSM series is written in first person while my other books are in third. It takes getting into an entirely different mindset to write first versus third person. I feel the author’s personality can leak into the wording more in third person than it can in first. Whereas in first person, it’s almost as if you’re an actor playing the part of the character whose voice you’re writing. It’s not only how they say things that are important, but also how they think, speak, and generally interact with the world around them.

Another major difference comes from the genre specifications. Since my BDSM series is classified as erotica, I have a lot more freedom of wording. In romance there is a line most readers don’t want to cross. They want description, but not too much, and as a writer you have to find a balance. The nature of BDSM requires a lot of description in order to explain what is going on. Positioning has even more meaning than in traditional romance. My romantic suspense novels also contain a lot of mystery. I like to take my readers on a journey and keep them guessing till the end. That means juggling things outside their immediate world, setting the stage for the stories climax where all is revealed. Sometimes vague descriptions can work in the authors favor when the want to touch on something, but not giveaway too much.

This book is the first in the Daniel brother's series. It is a lovely story about two people who are content in being alone; but are unable to deny the feelings that are surfacing when they are around each other. The story started off a bit slow; but picks up nicely after the first couple of chapters. Both of our main characters have issues that they have a hard time getting past because of their broken relationships. This is a story of love, betrayal, abuse, jealousy, and murder. If you are into romance or just like a good story, I highly recommend this book. I will definitely be keeping my eye out for the next book in the series.

It is my absolute pleasure to welcome my special guest today, Xan Marcelles, from the band Crooked Fang. I know how my readers just love vampires so, I had to get Xan over here to tell us a little about himself. So, here is the man! Your all jealous, right?

1-Tell us a little bit about Xan Marcelles. Don't hold back now.

Thanks for the invite, Eva.

Xan Marcelles huh? Well first of all, it’s my stage name. Real name’s Gabriel Nez, but I can’t exactly go running around with a dead man’s name. People would start asking questions because dead guys should kind of not be playing in a band and raising hell in a tavern every night.

What’s there to say really? I’m just a dude with fangs. It’s not a big deal except when it is, and when that happens, I take care of my business and go back to pretending it’s all right and nothing’s gonna change. But I know it will, and I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

2-What's it like working with Carrie and Nerine? They look pretty hot in their pics you know!

They are some slave drivers, if you want to know the truth. Nerine picks on my vocabulary and grammar and tries to get me to use the word ‘whom’. Who the hell uses ‘whom’ in America? I’m not wearing tweed.

Carrie actually killed my ass in her first version of my story about ten years ago. I’m still kind of miffed about that.

3-Who came up with the design for the CF symbol and does it have a special significance?

That logo sure is a pretty thing, isn’t it? The dude that thought it up was Carrie’s bitter-half, Lucas Clevenger. He just was taking one of his bath-naps one evening in the tub and wham. It hit him. Crooked Fang didn’t need just a font; it needed a logo, a recognizable symbol that people would know at a glance. He went and saw James Zuniga later that week and they hashed out something off Lucas’s scribbles. The end result is what you see, made with James’s computer skills. Definitely has a vampire vibe, but fitting for a band (or a hood emblem). If you take a closer look, the logo is full of meanings, but I’ll leave that up to the onlookers for interpretation. It’s more fun that way, don’t you think?

The blue is matched to my bass guitar. There’s too much damned black and red in vampire-land lately.

4-This is a curiosity question. Have you ever considered sneaking up on Carrie or Nerine when they are sleeping and taking a little taste?

I’m assuming Carrie has ice or acid running through her veins, so she’s stayed off the menu. Nerine on the other hand, hmm. Not sure if her husband would like his wife full of holes. But yeah. The thought’s crossed my mind.

5-I read an interview with you where you said you were not "sociable or flashy." You were talking about why you don't sing. You may not be flashy but you are "hot!" Does that get you in trouble with the ladies?

Depends on what kind of ‘trouble’ you’re referring to. The good kind or the thrown-in-jail kind? If you’re talking about the good kind, sure. Chicks dig dudes in bands. They seem to like their men tall. My hair gets mixed responses though. Some ladies like it; some tell me I need to get a haircut.

Anyway, I’m not starving for food or company, if that says anything.

6-Xan, you have that "bad-boy" aura about you. Do you think this is why the women go after you?

I’d like to think I’m a nice guy. Maybe I just look mean, but what can I do? It’s my face. Can’t really change it. Another thing is females have this misconception that big guys are invincible, and probably don’t have much in the way of feelings to speak of. Well it’s not true. I can hurt just like any other man.

7-Tell us about your band and how it got started?

Charlie, the owner of Pale Rider, wanted to bring in some business, so he posted an ad for a house band. I answered it, managed to find all the other members, and well, there you go. What attracted me to the Pale Rider gig over others is that Charlie offers room and board in exchange for playing on weekends and most holiday crowds. Not a bad trade in my opinion.

Four centuries after the Change, Grace Harper, a blacklisted PI, sets off to find the man responsible and convince him to set things to rights. In addition, her employer, Matthew Stanton, is accused of killing his father. When the police learn of her connection to Matthew, they give her a choice. Help them to find the evidence to convict him or she will find herself dead.

This is a futuristc science fiction tale where viruses are manipulated to stop the aging process. Not unlike present day, the wealthy will go to great lengths to preserve what is theirs and the less fortunate, do whatever it takes to survive from day to day. Grace has to work from both ends to try and survive by helping the police and at the same time, doing what is asked by her employer. She is taken prisoner and tortured and poisoned in the process. At the same time, she attempts to keep her wits about her in order to find a way to escape. Buried inside this story of intrigue and suspense, is a long buried love story with her former lover from fifty years before. Another attraction is simmering under the surface from the present day despite the dangers that await at every turn.

The storyline was a bit slow in the beginning; but once you passed the first couple of chapters, the storyline picked up and kept moving until the end. If you are into science fiction, you are sure to enjoy this story. If you just like a good story full of intrigue and mystery, you should also like this story. I highly recommend it.

Tess answers an ad in the newspaper for a house sitter at a small town called Saltburn-by-the-Sea. She has absolutely no idea what a house sitter does; but is told that it could be a long term proposition. That in itself appeals to Tess because she is trying to escape her old life. Without even being offered the job, only an interview, Tess packs up her daughter and the few possessions she has and makes the journey to take the job.

Joe sees this woman with her child and tells himself she is not right for the job; but he cannot bring himself to not give it to her. From the start, there is something about Tess that has a pull on him. Joe informs her that he is gone for long periods of time so she has the house basically to herself except for his dog. They are a bit testy to each other from the start because Joe doesn't know about little Em and Tess doesn't know about Wolf from the phone call. Tess manages to get the position and Joe gets his house sitter.

I really liked this book from the very beginning. Tess is a very insecure woman and has many secrets that take a long time for her to reveal. Even though she is insecure, she is able to stand on her own against Joe when the need arises. Joe is from some reviewers eyes, a piece of work. He has a nice set up for himself when he travels. A woman in France, one in Japan, one in the US, you get the idea. It works for him and it works for the ladies, so who are we to judge. He gets what he needs and so do they with no strings attached. Along comes Tess and Joe starts looking at things a bit differently. He starts having feelings for Tess and becomes attached to her daughter. He does not change over night ; but you can see his conscience starting to work on him. Joe of course has secrets, and like Tess, it takes a long time for him to reveal them. We begin to see the life that has shaped Joe into the person he has become.

This was a charming love story of two very different individuals who find what they want in life through each other. Both harbored secrets that needed to be told and in the process free themselves to love and start a fresh life. If you are a fan of fun, light hearted romance, this is the book for you. I do caution that the bedroom scenes get a bit graphic. If you are not averse to this, then I highly recommend this book.

Maria was adopted into an Indian family at the age of six. She had a tough life growing up and suffered at the hands of both father and mother, physical and mental abuse. Her father is the true authority figure in the family and set a course for an arranged marriage of Maria when she turns twenty. Maria is a determined young woman and wants no part of the arrangement and does all in her power to try to leave home.

Maria is a loner and only associates with two girls at school who only act like her friend on the surface. A handsome young man enters the school year mid stream and sets his sights on Maria. She is most assuredly flattered; but Alan is intent on evil purposes. Alan is most definitely not who he appears to be and the powers of darkness will intervene.

This is a YA paranormal read with the dark arts introduced. I was quite impressed with this book and was pulled in early on despite the rather lengthy prologue that had me a bit confused. As the story progresses, the meaning of the prologue becomes clearer. Once I started the meat of the story, I could not stop until I was finished. In fact, I read it in one sitting. Maria has had a horrible life with her adopted family; but she has managed to grow up to be a fairly independent young woman, although a bit shy and awkward. She sets her sights on something and is determined to set a course. Her judgment is poor though and she gets sucked in with Alan's sweet words and caring ways. I guess if you never get kind words at home, you take them where you can. Alan is out for revenge; but finds he cares for Maria more then he should. This adds a bit of a twist to the story. The storyline is well written and flows nicely. I am not so sure the crime Maria is charged with deserves the punishment she is supposed to get; but then again the story takes on an interesting twist at the end. I will definitely like to see what happens in the next installment. If you are into YA paranormal reads, I am sure you will enjoy this one.

This little "filly" may just get him back on his game with women.

Ronnie DelVecchio has just moved to Texas to start a new life after a divorce from her cheating husband. She is furious that her friends set up this lassoing on her birthday; but she can't get that kiss from that hunkalicious cowboy out of her mind. When he invites her for more after the show, she turns him down flat; but will she be able to resist for long?

This is the second book in The Secret Life of Cowboys Trilogy about three brothers who are trying to keep their ranch from going under and are all trying to recover from a disastrous relationship. This is a fast pace read that I was unable to put down. The storyline is really quite good; but is a bit trying at times. Dylan comes on strong throughout the book and some women would find him insulting, bordering on sexual harassment. Ronnie acts the tough girl; but she is a bit wishy- washy. Even so, overall, I enjoyed the book. This is a witty story of love, romance, raw sensuality and cowboys. If you are into any or all of the these, you will surely enjoy the book.

It doesn't hurt that the marriage is bringing a large dowry to the Drummond. Never in a million years did Elspeth think she would be carted off by a hulking highlander on a black stallion on her wedding day. Such a sacrilege for the kirk to be desecrated in such a manner.

The kidnapping starts out as revenge on the Drummond by "Mad" Rob McLaren for him kidnapping "Mad" Rob's wife, raping her and locking her away to plunge to her death from a tower. As the days go by, Elspeth chips away at the hardened heart of Rob and he finds himself falling for his hostage. Will Elspeth return his feelings or will he have to pay for his sins?

I have not met a story with hunky highlanders that I have not liked and this one is not exception. The story was a bit predictable in that I have run across this same theme on several different occasions. The story is different; but the highlander kidnapping an unwilling female and they fall in love is all too familiar. The story took quite a surprise turn towards the end when we get involved with witchcraft. "Mad" Rob is quite the protector even though he has kidnapped the lady. Elspeth is not your usual simpering female and holds up her own throughout the story. I really liked how she remained true to her word and Rob even though she knew that it could bring her demise. This is a wonderful highland romance full of adventure, betrayal, and love. If you like highland romances, this one should be no exception.

There is mounting passion with a storyline that allows you to use your own imagination without full blown bedroom scenes. The story is well written and keeps the reader on the edge. The author has no problem keeping the reader interested and focused. Despite the intense love story between Sapphira and Malachi, there is lots of action, adventure and intrigue. Even if you are not a fan of vampires, this story is so off the beaten path of a normal vampire romance, you most certainly would still enjoy the read. I highly recommend it.

Jessie has been newly promoted and is having a difficult time with her new partner. Her partner is much more experienced and finds fault with Jessie at every turn. Not only does Jessie have to deal with her partner, she is is finding it increasingly difficult to hide her ability to "flicker" as her mother always called it. Jessie knows she is different; but she does not know exactly what she is.

Jessie and her partner, Ray, get involved in a murder investigation of a local teen. In the process, Jessie discovers who and what she really is. To her complete surprise, she learns that those creatures she only heard about in fantasy tales, vampires, werewolves, demons and necromancers, really do exist. As the investigation progresses, she finds that the murderer may be closer to her then she realizes. She bands together with a crew of unusual characters in an attempt to solve the murder and discovers a lot about herself in the process.

This story is a fantastic read. I was hooked from the very beginning and could not put it down. The storyline is well written and despite the back and forth of of Jessie's "flickering" and her going inside the demon world, the story flows nicely. Jessie is an extremely likable character because despite her overall insecurities, she always holds up her end and plunges forward no matter how scared she may be. There is quite the cast in this book and definitely leaves it open for further stories from these characters. I for one would love to see more about any of them. If you are into fantasy reads, I am certain you will like this one. Who can go wrong with vampires, demons, werewolves and necromancers? I highly recommend it.

He eventually tells her his problem and together they seek out the help of a local woman who is into the occult.

This is a dark and gruesome tale of witchcraft and the dark side. It is the story of the Desmunde family and the many secrets that have been with them for years. The story is told through the eyes of Quito and brings to light the mystery, intrigue, and horrors that surround the family. The story starts out very slowly with an indepth description of family members and their relationship to one another. I really had a problem getting through that first chapter. The story in and of itself is quite good; but it dragged a bit too much for my taste. Every time Quito introduced another person into the storyline, there was always a description of their hair, eyes, and build. If it was a woman, she was always beautiful. There were some parts I found a bit redundant.

The story takes place in the town of Syroia, named after the great great grandmother of the same name. The murders of hundreds and hundreds of towns people have been going on for years; but the killings have never been solved because there was never any proof. The difficulty in solving the murders is because they were not committed by a normal human being. They are perpetrated by a supernatural force. If you are into dark magic and supernatural thrillers, this is the book for you. If you are looking for a crime novel, this is not what this is. It is not for the faint of heart. The descriptions of crime scenes are quite gruesome.

It is my distinct pleasure to be part of this special eBook short stories giveaway with Seventh Star Press and Stephen Zimmer. I will fill you in with complete details after a brief interview with Stephen.

1- What made you decide to write the singles to go along with the Rising Dawn Saga and The Fires in Eden Series?

I have been developing both of these series since the mid-1990’s, and in laying the foundation for the series and the worlds that they are set in, I sketched out quite a lot in terms of the histories, places, and other elements.

Obviously, a majority of this foundational material does not make it into the series directly, though sometimes there is a brief reference to an individual, period of history, or place during the events of the novels.

As a reader, haven’t you sometimes wanted to know more about something mentioned in a book? I’m one of those kinds of readers and have always wanted a way to expand on some of the underlying material. Even though these historical events, characters, or places are either minor or unmentioned in the novel series, I have given them quite a bit of thought, and the ideas for stories with them just jump forward in abundance.

The stories give active readers of my series more to explore and enjoy about the worlds, and I believe that they can enhance the enjoyment of the novel series.

I then took this idea a little farther, as I thought it would be a good thing for some of my fellow SSP authors to do, as they have some really intriguing series. I then put the idea forward to see what everyone thought. I am happy to say that it was well-received within the SSP family!

2- Are the short stories actually a continuation of the two series or can they stand alone?

That’s the cool thing about these short stories. In the sense that they take place in the worlds of the novel series, they add depth and dimension to the experience of the readers who have been reading the novels. On the other hand, they are stand alone stories too, and require no prior familiarity with the novels to enjoy them. Kind of like the best of both worlds!

3- Are there plans to write more shorts to go along with the series?

Absolutely! I already have a few in later stages of development, and a great number of ideas for others. The ideas just leap out from the foundational material created for the novel series. There is simply a lot to draw from, and I can see a great number of these coming to life in the years to come. I really hope readers enjoy them as much as I love writing them!

4- Will there be more novels to add to the series? If so, when can we expec them?

Oh yes, there are a projected seven novels in the Rising Dawn Saga, and either 7 or 8 in the Fires in Eden series. Book Three in the Fires in Eden series comes out late spring, and The Seventh Throne was Book Three in the Rising Dawn Saga, so there is quite a bit more ahead in the main two series. Book Four in the Rising Dawn Saga should come out towards the end of 2012. There is about a 7 month window between my novel releases with the two series being alternated on the schedule.

This short story takes us on an adventure with the awesome Xan Marcelles, bassist for the cover band, Crooked Fang. For those of you who don't know, Xan is a vampire, and a fine vampire he is. He is escorted out of the remote tavern in Pinecliffe, Colorado by some men who identify themselves as FBI. Are they really FBI? Would the FBI inject a man with a needle and truss him up like a Thanksgiving turkey?

Along comes another not completely human, Ash, who is Xans only hope of escape. Ash is in the same location to try and retrieve the cartouche of Amunet the First. At first, he sticks his nose up at Xan because he considers him an animal who sucks blood from humans. After considerable thought, Ash realizes he is not much different. He is an Inkarna who exists by stealing bodies. They band together in an effort to collect the artifact and break Xan out of his prison. An unlikely pair who are more alike then they think.

This is a wonderful story that had me hooked from the start. I am not usually into short stories because they usually leave you wanting for more. This one is no exception. Fortunately, there will be more when Xan stars in his own novel when it is released in August. I did notice one major difference with this short, it gave me the feeling of a complete story. I find many shorts to be lacking something that makes them seem incomplete. This story is full of action, murder, suspense, magic, and mixed in it all, I get the vibes of a conscience from our two main characters. The story is told in the first person alternating chapters between Xan and Ash. This was also well done and made the story flow smoothly. It is a quick read and can be easily read in one sitting. If you love vampires and magic, I am sure you will love this story. And ladies, let's not forget the two sexy guys.

This awesome book is a collection of essays so to speak in the life of the author. I don't like to call them essays because that sounds like a school assignment and a bit dry. This book is far from dry. It had me laughing out loud from the beginning to the end. Brian's dream hive is what it says, a dream. I will take a sentence from his book. "In my dream hive, we'd part from convention and allow not only for a dominant queen- some things are a given, even in dreams- but also an omnipotent, greatly feared, yet much-adored, King Bee." At least he has part of that correct! As I said, this is a dream hive.

The author has a way with words that just sucks you right into what he is telling you. He describes in great detail some everyday happenings with his wife and family that will have you in stitches. Knowing Brian as she does, she felt it her duty to give him some guidelines into what he could not write. For instance, one chapter is titled, "My Wife Told Me Not to Write About Sex." I think he misunderstood the directions just a bit. Hench the chapter, "I Thought I Told You Not to Write About Sex." What part of the first did you not understand?

I could go on and on about this book, but you need to read it for yourself. If you are a fan of such authors as Erma Bombeck, I think you will love this book. If you want something to pick up your spirits and have you in stitches, this book is definitely for you. I for one am hoping there will be another one forth coming.

The amateur sleuths plunge head long into their own investigation and find a bit more then they bargained for; but they also find out they are much stronger then they think.

This is a quick, fun read that will have you chuckling at dear eighty year old Millie who is a feisty, no nonsense gal. Edna is a bit timid and treads lightly because her husband is all too present and watching what the ladies are up too. She always manages, however, to speak up and keep her cool when the need arises. Trish is the younger of the three and is always trying to keep Millie in line. That proves to be a full time job in itself. The storyline is quite good even though I don't think this could happen in real life. I am pretty certain these ladies would be nailed for interfering in a police investigation. No matter. They are determined to prove their friend's innocence. If you are up for a quick read with a bit of suspense, I highly recommend this book. I sure hope we will be seeing more from this trio of sleuths in the future.

This story follows basically along the lines of the original book except for the fact that Ebenezer Scrooge is a nasty old man because of vampires. The vampires have been after him since birth and have had him fed minute amounts of blood without his knowing it. He is not a vampire; but the Queen of all vampires wants him badly. They are plotting to attack and take over the human race. Tiny Tim is to be a sacrifice.

Kind and beautiful Belle is a seamstress by day and a vampire huntress by night. She actually provides shelter for those who are displaced because of the vampires. Scrooge's nephew, Fred, and Bob Cratchit are some of Belle's soldiers in the fight against the vampires. Belle is essentially protected against the vampires because she knows who they are and has a special instinct against them.

Unbeknown to Ebenezer, his new tenants in his basement are the King and Queen of the vampires. Jacob Marley makes a visit to Ebenezer to warn him of the evil lurking around him and convince him of the existence of the vampires. Little does he know that the vampires have many human minions under their wing to aid them in the humans destruction. Scrooge has a short time to make everything right with the world.

Even though this followed the original tale, it was a very slow and difficult read for me. I love vampires, but they just didn't fit into the scheme of things with old Ebenezer. It seemed to take forever to get Scrooge to where he should be and then it ended abruptly with Scrooge in love with Belle again. Sometimes, I think the original tales should be left alone. Hunter stumbles upon a book that Toni is reading about how to marry a man. He gets a copy to study as a joke; but becomes more and more infatuated with her. All Toni wants to do is get the night mare week over with and return to New York. She has experienced panic attacks ever since she was a child and became lost in the woods for three days. Hunter is determined to help her overcome her fear and get closer to her in the process.

This is the fifth book in the Domestic Gods series by Robin Kaye. I have not read any of the other books, nor I have read this author before. The book is not a bad read; but I found it a bit too hokey. Toni is very unpredictable and actually seems rather immature for her age. This could be due to the fact she practically raised herself from a very young age. Her mother goes through husbands like some of us would go through a package of bon bons leaving her little choice. Hunter is the real he man rescuer. This makes Toni a rather unlikely match except for the fact she needs all the help she can get. All of the other characters have some real character flaws considering most are professionals. In addition, the relationship spun completely out of control between Hunter and Toni and they end up in a "till death due us part" deal in a few days time. The entire storyline became a bit unbelievable. Even so, it was not a bad read. I just prefer my stories to be believable.

He is determined to return the plantation to his mother and stepsister whom he feels it rightfully belongs. There is one small problem with his plan that he did not bargain for, he finds himself drawn to Angelica.

During his attempt to place Angelica in a compromising position, he realizes the ship is getting ready to blow up. He ends up saving her from drowning and takes her to his home to supervise her recovery. During the process, he manages to marry her without her knowledge. Whenever she finally awakens, she goes along with what he says, even though she is not convinced of the truth of what he says. Despite everything that happens, she finds herself drawn to him.

This was a very enjoyable story despite the fact that I found Angelica to be a wishy washy woman. She fluctuates between romantic feelings and love for Renold to being upset with him and planning to return to her father. Granted, Renold is not the most trustworthy and loving individual; but there is something about him that drew me to him. Maybe it is that dark and brooding, bad-boy image that is a draw factor. Despite the fact I didn't like Angelica, I found this to be a good read. There was adventure, intrigue, romance, and deception. Again, lets not forget, bad-boy Renold. The storyline was quite good; but did drag a bit in the beginning. Once you get past the initial introduction, the story took off and had me pulled in. All in all, I found this a very good read to get the imagination going. If you are a fan of historical fiction, I think you would enjoy the book.

Hugh is checking through a mass of rubble and finds the beautiful Amelia Bailey, an attorney from the US. She went to the Bahamas to help her brother and sister-in-law adopt their new son.

Amelia had been caring for the child while her brother and his wife went out to get something to eat. The earthquake separated the family and none of the them know whether either pair are alive. While Amelia and Joshua are hospitalized, the baby is kidnapped and Amelia is pulled along. In comes Hugh to the rescue. Will he be able to keep them safe until he is able to get them back to civilization?

This is the second book in the Elite Force Series. There is alot going on in this book and several relationships that could be a story in and of themselves. To keep this simple, I will only deal with Hugh and Amelia. Hugh is a risk taker because of the death of his wife and daughter years before in an airplane accident. He has blamed himself for years and has been a bit of a lose cannon ever since. He is determined not to give his heart again and steers away from relationships because of it. Lets not forget to mention he avoids any attachment to children. Will he be able to keep his promise to himself when he is in such close proximity to Amelia and the child.

Amelia had a bad marriage that ended and has no desire to involve herself in another relationship. It becomes increasingly more difficult when the tension between her and Hugh is quite obvious. She is unable to keep up her strong court room air when she is on unfamiliar ground. Will she be able to let down her guard and allow Hugh to guide the way for them?

If you like action and adventure with some romance mixed in, you will definitely want to read this book. The sexual tension is hard to ignore and the sparks will ignite. This is one of those reads that goes quickly and is over much too soon. Catherine Mann knows how to hold your interest and turn up the heat. I highly recommend it for those in search of hot guy material and an afternoon of action and romance.

Rose is looking for a second chance at love. The young man she gave her heart to has left the community probably never to return. She is introduced to a young man who is interested in her; but he has not been baptised yet and is not staying true to his Amish faith. What will Rose decide for her future? Can she marry someone else when her heart belongs to a forbidden love?

This is the third book in the Rose Trilogy. The first is The Thorn and the second is The Judgment. As always, Beverly Lewis writes a wonderful story of love, faith and community. She brings to life the fact that the Amish community, not unlike any other, has its share of problems that have to be faced on a daily basis. They struggle with difficult decisions just as we do. They realize that just because they believe in the Lord, this does not exempt them from the day to day struggles that we all face. The biggest difference is the fact that they try and follow the teachings of their faith.

The storyline is quite good and flows smoothly. Hen and Rose both face their problems head on and ask the almighty to guide them on the right path. This does not keep their life from being full of difficult decisions. The one to grow the most in this story is Brandon, Hen's husband. He finds out what it means to develop a relationship with the almighty and he discovers what is most important in his life and what he needs to do to achieve it.

I highly recommend this book to lovers of Amish fiction or to anyone who just enjoys a good clean Christian story.

Mandy Steenburg accepts a job as the school superintendent in the Pacific Northwest timber country to escape a disastrous romance. She is convinced she is prepared for the job until she discovers that the community is not happy with her being there. Someone is definitely not thrilled she is there when several attempts on her life occur.

The former superintendent, Grange Timberlain, does not appear too thrilled she is there and they have more then one confrontation. A feud exists between Grange and Vince Lafitte, a member of the school board, that goes way back. When Vince shows an interest in Mandy, is Grange annoyed with Mandy or Vince? Does he have other motives for his annoyance?

All in all this was a very good story except that the storyline moves a bit slow at the beginning. Mandy goes in expecting to take over and finds herself at a disadvantage because most of the town is against her. She is determined to succeed; but she seems to be fighting a losing battle. She attempts to hide her frustration; but the tears seem to get the best of her at times. She seems to have a hangup on the staff calender and expects it to be accurate at all times. It seems to show just a bit too much emphasis on something not so important. In the beginning Grange appears to take an instant dislike to Mandy. Out of the blue, that seems to change and there is nothing to indicate the change of heart. It just is. This kind of threw me off for a bit. There are some other characters who are not what they appear to be; but I will leave it at that so as not to add spoilers. If you like a good story that will keep you guessing with a bit of romance and mystery thrown in, you are sure to enjoy this book.

Georgiana and Sebastian collaborate on some musical pieces. Both feel some attraction to the other but neither one wants to put a name to their relationship. How naive young people can be. Lord Craxton, on the other hand, has no problems with voicing his opinion, even if it means deceiving the other party. Will she and Mr. Butler ever decide to verbalize the way they truly feel about each other?

This is the seventh book in the Darcy Saga. I have not read any of the others; but this book can easily stand alone. I am not a big fan of Jane Austen; but this was probably one of the better ones that I have read. I know this is a different era from today; but I have such difficulty with the formality of the times. The storyline in general was quite good. It was a bit slow at times; but it was able to maintain my interest. It was such a pleasure to see how Sebastian and Georgiana interest in music brought them together on so many levels. Lord Craxton was another story. There was just something so off putting about this man. I don't think he ever really listened to what Georgiana ever said. He heard what he wanted to hear. I am sure you Austen fans out there will truly love the story.

The family of Melusine of Ulle is destroyed by the ravages of war. She is taken in by King Stephen and his Queen; but the Queen considers her a threat to the crown because of her connection to Scotland. Since she does not trust her, she is forced to marry the King's right hand man, Bruno. Bruno shows complete loyalty to the King so Queen Maude feels this is the best way to keep watch over Melusine.

Melusine is completely lost in her grief due to the loss of her entire family and is to all appearances completely mad. The Queen is not convinced and thinks it is all an act, albeit a very good one. Melusine and Bruno have absolutely nothing in common; but eventually sparks smolder and affection and love develop.

This is the second in the Tales of Jernaeve series. The first book is A Tapestry of Dreams. I did not read the first book; but this book can be easily read as a stand alone. The description of the book, as well as, the book cover is very deceiving. I chose this book because I thought it was going to be an historical romance. There is a romance in the book; but I found the book to be consumed with more historical fact then anything else. The author did a fantastic job of research for the book; but this is not why I wanted to read it. Since I am not a real history fan, I cannot say I enjoyed the book. Readers who enjoy factual descriptions would do well with this book. If you are looking for a real romance, you will not find it here.

The book is written in the first person and alternates between Bruno and Melusine chapter for chapter. There is a considerable amount of information that is repeated between the two and tends to drag the story on forever. I am not fond of first person writing so this was another strike against this book for me. Why did I read the book? From the information that was provided concerning the book, I had a totally different impression of what I was getting into. Even though I would not recommend this book, historical fiction fans may enjoy the book.

Ella is a strong woman who thinks she knows what she wants; but is unable to admit to herself what that truly is. Ethan becomes a man who finally knows what it means to love someone. Erica develops a backbone that truly sets her family on their ear. All around, this is a wonderful story that will keep you engrossed from the get go. Anyone who likes a good story, no matter the type you normally read, will surely like this one. I highly recommend it.

Laird Campbell has no idea what he is getting himself into and certainly does not expect the lovely Lady to grow on him. He quickly discovers she is more trouble then she is worth. Lets not forget he is having difficulty letting her go.

This is one of those take me away stories where I became absolutely engrossed in the story. I love Scotland, highlanders and the romance behind them. Once I start reading, don't disturb me until I am finished. This is a wonderful story of romance, love, greed, jealousy, deception, and honor. The storyline flows smoothly from the beginning and had me pulled in from the start. The characters are witty and amusing. Lady Tynsdale is a strong willed woman; but shows absolutely no common sense most of the time. Laird Campbell is a strong and determined Scotsman; but he has a soft spot when it comes to his sisters and Lady Tynsdale. I think I fell in love with him because he is able to show his vulnerability to the Lady. In return, she is able to accept it without ridicule. All in all this a wonderful romance that you will surely love if you enjoy highlanders and Scotland.

For the cowboy lovers out there, this is a good story for you. Romance is in the air and practically sizzles off the page. Lacey is a former trophy wife who has some difficulty letting go of her past. She wants to start over fresh and be her own woman; but she has alot of baggage she is carrying. Chase also has emotional baggage he is carrying because of Lacey's ex-husband. Will the two be able to get past their issues and form some kind of alliance together? The storyline is okay; but it did have a tendency to drag a bit. Krystal, Chase's employee, is somewhat of a burden to the story and I have to say I was happy when we didn't hear from her again. She was a bit over the top. All in all this is not a bad read. It is a story of love, creed, loss, and forgiveness. Let's not forget the sexy cowboy!

The storyline flows smoothly from the beginning to the end. There is mystery, deceit, friendship that passes all imagination, romance and lust that will have you begging for more. There is something to be said for a book that can have you laughing one minute, panting for the shear sexual tension, and crying at the same time. Grace Burrows has a way with words that shows a wit, as well as, a passionate and romantic side. If you like a good story or historical fiction is high on your reading list, I highly recommend this book.

Shay is learning things about herself that is causing some emotional upheaval. In addition, she must learn to embrace the warrior nature in herself and the warrior who has watched over her for years. Together, they must stop the evil that is destined to kill her. If you like highlanders and a good romance, I highly recommend this book. If you just like a good book and an exciting fantasy read, you can't go wrong either.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable read. You will laugh at the feisty and haughty, Theodora. Birdie, the habitual thief, develops a conscience that is causing her to have second thoughts. The storyline is well written and had me hooked from the start. A strange and volatile relationship between Birdie and the reporter, Hugh, has you shaking your head at times. The story leads into the Christmas season making this a very nice read to add to your holiday enjoyment. This is a wonderful story of love, betrayal, forgiveness, and the general goodness of man. I highly recommend this book to anyone who just enjoys a good read.

It is with a great deal of pleasure that I welcome John Cavi to my blog today. As you will see, John is not only an amazing individual and author; but he is also a medical miracle. Please join me in welcoming him today.

1- I have to say you have quite an impressive education record considering you failed kindergarten. What exactly made you decide to write a book at this time in your life when you have a business and law degree?

My entire education and career were centered on business, and when I retired, I had no intention of writing a book. However, a grim life changing event at age 72 provided the opportunity to begin a new career. In 2002, I was diagnosed with a rare form of stage 4 lymphoma. I was told by the doctors at the Yale New Haven Hospital that I had two months to live without treatment and ten months with the full chemo regimen. I choose the chemo therapy, and on the fourth therapy session the doctors offered me a July slot in an experimental stem cell transplant trial that YNHH was planning to initiate in June. In July they killed my immune system and gave me a new immune system.

Five months after the transplant, the cancer again spread to the lymph nodes, and I developed several tumors which required radiation therapy. On the sixth month, I reached my nadir. My weight was down to 112 lbs, and I had an infection from the wounds generated by the radiation therapy. At that point the new immune system had not kicked in, and the prognosis didn’t look promising. Two weeks after I hit rock bottom, like the inflection of a hockey stick, I began to feel better. A CAT scan two weeks later indicated that the cancer was gone. The doctor’s called it a miracle.

While in the hospital for the chemo therapy and the stem cell transplant, a total of six months, I read over 50 books. One of the topics that piqued my interest was the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and I read several books on this and related subjects. Two books caught my attention. The first, a doctoral thesis,—“A History of the Israeli and Palestinian Conflict” by Dr. Mark Kessler—presented the conflict from three points of view—the Israelis, the Palestinians, and the unbiased version of the author who reconciled the discrepancies of the two antagonists. The second, a non fiction book—“Gidions Spies,” by Gordon Thomas—is the definitive book about the inner workings of the Mossad and their operational successes and failures. While reading Gidion’s Spies, I recalled having a vague familiarity with some of the material. It then occurred to me that I had read that same material in Daniel Silva’s novels. Silva selected a real Mossad operation that was outlined in Gidion’s Spies and crafted a fictional novel around that single real event. I said to myself, “hey I could do that,” and at that point I decided that I would craft a novel around the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and depict my fictional solution.

2-Will you tell the readers a little about the background of your book, The President's Ultimatum, and how it came to be?

The novel is a thriller that portrays a fictional storyline in the factual environment of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict... It’s similar to Michael Creighton’s State of Fear, a fictional tale wrapped around the global warming issue.

The 43rd president of the Unites States, Gerald W. Burke, is entering his second term, and after a lack luster performance during his prior four years, senses he must do something dramatic to establish his legacy and claim his place in history. Out of a desire to improve relations with the Muslim world, win the war on terror, and with a strong dose of hubris, he devises a bold plan to resolve the Israeli/Palestinian conflict that had eluded the world leaders including his predecessors for 60 years. He presents both parties with an ultimatum to resolve the conflict on his terms or else. This sets off a chain of unintended consequences that threaten his presidency and his life.

At the center of the action is Ari Bugari, an Israeli undercover agent, recruited into al-Qaeda after Iraq is defeated by the Coalition Forces. On orders from al-Qaeda’s leadership, Ari pursues President Burke across three continents. Caught between his Israeli and al-Qaeda masters, Ari, becomes the hunted quarry, and is forced into hiding, with his wife Hannah, when he learns the explosive truth that underlies his relationship with Mossad Director General, Shalom Eitan.

The novel is set in the toxic political environments of Washington D. C. and Jerusalem. In an effort to derail Burke’s peace initiative, Congress, teamed with the formidable Israeli Lobby—which contribute millions to the coffers of both political parties—frustrates Burke’s political agenda by stalling his domestic initiatives and rebelling against his peace initiative. Added to the mix are the Israeli Conservative Alliance (a coalition of the religious right parties) and al-Qaeda, both opposed to the peace initiative, and both prepared to do anything, including assassinating the president to prevent its implementation.

The interaction and maneuvering of these various factions forms the basis of the novel. Through the dialogue of the characters, questions are raised about the role of the US in the conflict, the negative impact that the polarized political environment in the US, Israel, and the Middle East has on its people, and the effect that the conflict has on our relations with the Muslim world. The novel also suggests a possible resolution of the conflict, and outlines the potential lethal long term consequence if the conflict is not resolved. But in its rawest sense, this thriller is a tale of adventure, intrigue, deception, revenge, and redemption, interwoven with a poignant love story.

3-I think many people would have given up on a massive writing project with all the health issues you faced. What kept you focused and made you determined to complete the book?

The President’s Ultimatum is my first novel, and it was conceived and written over an eight-year period, a hectic time of my life. I was in and out of hospitals with a myriad of problems—lymphoma, chemo, stem cell transplant, TIA stroke, heart attack, sepsis, and malignant mouth surgery. A side effect from the transplant therapy left me with serious cornea issues. For the first two years, I composed the plot and subplots in my mind because the vision problems impacted my ability to read and type.

Late in 2004, I underwent cornea and cataract surgery, and in 2005, I typed the first draft— a manuscript of 700 single spaced pages. It began in 1890 and in chronological order, ended in 2008. Prior to submitting the manuscript for an editorial evaluation early in 2006, I went through a first self-edit. I shortened the manuscript to about 600 pages eliminating a few sub-plots, and changed the tone of the novel. The first editorial evaluation was very encouraging, but the editor recommended that I reduce and restructure the manuscript with less exposition and more dialogue.

At about this time, my vision began to deteriorate further. The glare made it virtually impossible to see the keyboard and the black on white copy on the monitor. The monitor problem was solved by changing to a black background with white letters, but the keyboard was still a problem and progress was slow. I implemented the suggestions but reached an impasse with the vision issue, I acquired a reading machine which permitted me to read printed and written matter in a white on black mode, and I was able to make changes to the manuscript as my wife, Ellen, proofread and annotated the printed pages. In 2008, I submitted the manuscript, now 500 pages, for a second evaluation, and the editor was even more encouraging and suggested that I work with a development editor to reduce the manuscript further. I was reluctant to engage in a development edit because it was an online process which would have been counterproductive because of my vision impediment.

In December 2009, I was referred to the Boston Foundation for Sight for evaluation, and after being fitted with Celera Lens prosthetics my vision improved dramatically (a miracle) so that I was able to resume writing, and in February 2010, I began working with the editor. He suggested 563 changes mainly focused on eliminating all the sub-plots and all the political material, and reorganizing and restructuring the flow of the manuscript. At the completion of this effort, the manuscript was drastically reduced from 500 single spaced pages to 460 double spaced pages, eliminating all but a sliver of the political material.

The novel took eight years from conception to release of the final product, and was my single focus for that period of my life. With all the stops and starts, it became both a challenge and an obsession. I sense I sublimely thought that if I completed the novel, I would somehow also succeed in overcoming all the ills that I was plagued with. It was a long journey, but I never faltered. I was determined to see the novel to fruition.

4-I know you had numerous health issues and had to edit a large amount from your book. What were the most challenging things you encountered while writing your book?

Throughout my college years, an English lit and business writing course formed the extent of my literary education. Early in my business career, I was a consultant and wrote many business reports. I was considered an excellent business writer, but the extent of my creative writing experience was limited to writing a few poems for the English lit course.

I faced two major challenges. My initial manuscript read like a business report, and I spent many months rewriting the text in a literary style. Reducing the size of the manuscript and reorganizing the flow of the storyline without losing the thread of the story took most of the effort and proved to be the most challenging task. Coupled with the vision issues, it turned into a monumental task. Character development and dialogue, which I thought would be the most daunting tasks, were not a problem. Surprisingly, writing the first draft of the manuscript took ten percent of the effort; reorganizing and reducing took ninety percent.

5- Do you have any works in progress? If so, can you tell us a little bit about it?

The final product was not what I had in mind when I began to write The President’s Ultimatum. Now that I have more clarity, I can see that my initial effort, a saga, could have been woven into three distinct manuscripts. My vision has improved to permit me to research, a variety of subject matter, I am using the jettisoned political material to craft a number of blogs under the Common Sense Revisited series that I post on Ezine and my website—johncavi.com. Eventually, I plan to fashion the blogs into a non-fiction book in the style of Friedman’s book—The World is Flat—which is an amalgamation of a series of opinion articles that he had written for the N.Y. Times.

I am also researching a novel about the Iran nuclear issue. The plan is to write a fictional tale, which I have worked out in my mind, around that real time event. Some of the material and characters that were discarded when a major subplot was eliminated from the original manuscript will form the basis of the Iran novel. Also on my agenda is novel in the Grisham, Connelly genre with an auto biographical touch.

6-Who has had the most influence on your writing and why?

From my early years, I have been interested in history. I was awarded the American Legion medal for attaining the highest grade in American History in the NY State Regents exam. Over the years I’ve read extensively—from historical novels, biographies about world and military leaders, to books on events that have shaped our world. Hemmingway, Graham Greene, Tolstoy, Remarque, Michener, Pasternak, are some of the earlier favorites Woodward, LeCarre, Casey, Ludlum, Silva, DeMille, Forsyth, Flynn and a host of others are my current favorites. Most of these books are well researched and in some cases very informative. Since my novel is in that general genre, It follows that the type of novel I wrote was influenced by these authors. The idea to write this specific novel sparked from reading, A History of the Israeli Palestinian Conflict, by Mark Kessler, and Gidions Spies, by Gordon Thomas. When I correlated these two books to the Silva novels, I knew the kind of book I would write...

7- What do you do for fun and relaxation?

Read, read, read, and write, write, write. I recently read three non-fiction books about the financial services industry—On The Brink, Asylum, and The Big Short—and I wrote several blogs for my Common Sense Revisited series. While some might look at writing as a job, I really enjoy puttingmy ideas on paper. For me, writing is something that I do for fun. When I’m not writing, I spend my free time reading, and I seem to never have enough time to read all the books on my reading list. I don’t watch much TV, except during the football season. I’m a fanatical NY Giants fan, and I attend every game. We try to get away to some exotic place every year, and movies, the theater and dinner with friends are our typical form of relaxation. Our two grandchildren are at the age when they bring much joy and are a lot of fun to be with, and so we spend a fair amount of time with them. While it’s not always relaxing, it is fun.

It’s the time of year that I would be looking forward to the skiing season, but the aftermath of the transplant impacted my balance and permanently put a stop to my skiing, a sport that for me was the ultimate form of fun, relaxation and solitude.

I have to say I was quite surprised by this story. This is as far away from my usual type of read that you can get. Once I started this book, I could not put it down. The storyline is wonderful. The author takes you back and forth across the continents in such a way that I was actually able to keep up with what was happening. Politics is not my thing and I actually avoid it like the "plague" as they say. This story is about politics, but it is a story of adventure, betrayal and love. The story is so real that you can truly believe the events and the conspiracy and betrayal in the government. Of course, we know these things don't really happen. The only problem I had with the book was trying to keep the characters straight. There are so many of them, I finally gave up and concentrated on the major players. I don't feel I lost anything by doing this. In amidst all the conspiracy and murder, we have a fascinating love story between Ari and Hannah. This is important to the story; but I don't consider it a major theme.

For those of you who like politically charged novels, I highly recommend this book. It will keep you on the edge of your seat. You will see corruption in the government and betrayal on every front. I think you will see that no one can ever truly be trusted implicitly; because we as humans have a voice. Even the most well- being individuals, end up betraying someones trust. How many times have you heard the phrase, "This never leaves this room." I will never look at that phrase in the same way again.

The Dashwood sisters are all grown up, Marianne is married on the rebound to a much older man. Elinor and Edward Ferrars are a quiet, unassuming couple with two young boys. Margaret is the unconventional young woman who has a tremendous desire for learning and travel.

Marianne is not an overly happy woman who is easily swayed. Her former lover comes to town and puts her life in a bit of a tail spin. Elinor is a worrisome someone and a bit of a busy body who thinks she has to help solve the entire families' problems. Margaret, dear Margaret, is a hand full to be sure. She is shy, but holds her own in any situation. She defies convention when she becomes involved in a love affair with a scholar she meets while traveling.

For you Jane Austen fans, this is the book for you. This is a companion volume to Jane's Sense and Sensibility. In this book, the Dashwood sisters are all grown up and involved in three very different lives and loves. The storyline was okay; but I found it a bit choppy at times. I had some difficulty in staying on target with my reading. Since I am not an Austen fan, this could have been some of my problem; but I have read some other versions that I have enjoyed. The sisters are quite the trio. Marianne is a piece of work. She is very easily swayed and is so gullible. I was not endeared to her at all. Elinor tries to shoulder responsibility for everyone even though they are all grown up. Margaret is my heroine in the story. She is the only one of the sisters with any backbone and is not afraid to go after what she wants. She defies convention at every turn. A most lovable character. All in all, this was not a bad read. I would not, however, place it on one of my top reads.

Best of all, she is married to a district court judge who despises Brian.

Holly Cananaugh-Winter is an ex-socialite who was left practically penniless following the death of her husband. She has been keeping a secret since his death and is determined to keep it that way. She is raising her two daughters alone when she first encounters Brian. There is a definite physical attraction that neither one can deny.

This is a wonderful story of suspense, healing, giving and love that you won't want to miss. It would make a wonderful addition to your Christmas reading collection. The storyline flows smoothly and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Brian is a bit of a womanizer and has major commitment issues because of being jilted by his former lover. Even though he has an attraction for Holly, he does not want to admit it might be love. Holly is a piece of work. For most of the story, she has the feel sorry for me attitude. She considers herself almost destitute because she has to shop at a lower end company like Walmart for groceries instead of paying twice as much at a high dollar store. She no longer has a home in the country club area; but has a comfortable home to live in. She is actually ashamed of this fact. There are several woman who have befriended her and they are probably the only true friends she has ever had. She is extremely materialistic and you want to smack her. By the end of the story, she is turning her life around and she is becoming likable.

Brian and Holly become closer as the story progresses because an assassin is out to kill Holly. He has been hired by a powerful man, who like so many, has his eye on wealth and position. Will Brian be able to keep Holly and her children safe? Will the holidays be a season of joy and happiness or will the past prevent them both from going after what is important?

Samuel Beck is on a mission to make amends with his younger sister for wrongs that he feels he did to her. He is headed on a steamboat to Montana with just himself and his mother's bible to keep him company. Fannie and Samuel find themselves on the same ship and discover an attraction developing over the long journey. A very unlikely attraction. They are opposites in every way.

The book starts out in the year 1869 and covers the years through 1874. Fannie is a spoiled and privileged young woman who has no clue about being on her own. Why should she? She has always been provided for. She is a bit self-centered and generally wants things her own way. She does, however, discover that we don't always get what we want. She becomes determined to make her way and she becomes more endearing in my eyes. Samuel is a kind and caring man who is determined to watch out for Fannie and make sure no harm comes to her.

This is a lovely Christian story that makes clear, that no matter what you believe, none of us is promised a life without pain and sorrow. Both of our main characters grow throughout the story and develop a keener understanding about what life is about. Of the two, Fannie does more growing with a deeper knowledge of how to live in this world. Samuel has his own hardships to face. He finds out what it is like to grow stronger in his relationship with the Lord. I highly recommend this book to lovers of Christian fiction or anyone who just loves a good, clean love story.

Emily is invited to a bonfire night/Halloween Party at her neighbors down the street. She doesn't really know them because they just moved into the house; but she decides to go because she is missing her dog, Jessie who just died. She finds herself amidst some rather strange characters and to top the night off, she is pulled into a murder. One that no one else believes happened.

This is a short piece of fiction that can be easily read in one sitting. From the get go, you are pulled in with some rather strange and unusual characters. The way the story is presented, I had the impression this was going to be a murder mystery night and some of the guests were the actors. This turned out not to be the case. There is little known about Emily and it is a bit confusing how she will end up being a sleuth. In this particular story, she seems more like a busy body. The story is short; but it packs a big punch with information. The reader must stay focused or will lose their way around in the course of the storyline. I did not actually find anything amusing in this story; but I do look forward to the next one. I suspect that Emily could get herself into some mischief. If you are looking for something fast-paced and unusual, I highly recommend this one.

The Dukes desperate need for an heir drives him further into the dark recesses of his mind and the only person who is able to give him any relief is his mistress, Francesca. Alfonso obsesses over an imagined plot against himself and his mind climbs deeper into despair and his fury builds. Lucrezia's dreams become less and less a reality and more of a nightmare. Eventually, she heads down a dangerous path that may well lead to her destruction.

This is a wonderful historical fiction novel that was inspired by Robert Browning's monologue, "My Last Duchess." I had never read the piece before so I did so, not once but twice before I read the book. I had no clue as to what I read. This concerned me a bit until I started reading the novel, and I was pleasantly surprised. The storyline was quite intriguing and flowed nicely from the beginning to the end. The character of Lucrezia was very naive and because of her young age was very immature when she married the Duke. She had no clue what to expect upon her marriage and was quite appalled at her husband's behavior. It was not long before she started to realize that things were amiss. Alfonso was a very dark and dismal character. It became apparent quickly that he had some kind of mental illness that only increased as the inability to produce an heir became an issue.

All in all this was a wonderful read. The characters and the story were handled well. The mental illness of Alfonso was very bleak to the story; but it is also what made the true interest of the story initially. I think all historical fiction fans will find this to be a worthwhile read. Step into the passions of sixteenth century. Follow a story of forbidden love and darkness that will haunt you.

As the days go by, strange things happen and the voices that Eva hears are truly there. She ends up being swept back into the eighteenth century to a time of a dethroned king and she becomes entwined in the lives of the Butler brothers. Each time she goes back in time, she begins to realize, she no longer feels at home in her own time; but chasing the past can be a dangerous thing to do.

This book is an absolutely fantastic read. Once I started, I could not put it down. This book has mystery, romance and time travel. Three of my most favorite things. The author takes the heroine flawlessly from the present day back to the past and forward again. Eva never knows when and where she will leave. I found it rare to read a time travel book where the traveler goes back and forth that the transition is so flawless. It just happens here and is done with perfect timing. There is an underlying romance that develops that just seems to simmer under the surface and you wait for it to explode. Next to Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, I have never encountered a romance that just leaves you wanting more.

The heroine is not a super strong woman; but she fits the bill. Our hero, Daniel, is not your drop dead gorgeous kind of guy; but he has a sex appeal that draws you to him. He has traits that a woman cannot help but fall in love with. He is devoted, loving, caring, and loyal to a fault. This is one hauntingly, romantic story and I can't recommend it highly enough. I have never read this author before, but I most definitely will again. I for one hope that we may see more of this pair and the love that has crossed all boundaries of understanding. Tine and destiny await no man.

The more it calls, the deeper Zack loses himself to the Demon inside of him.

This story is a dark and treacherous ride through the horrors of the mind and soul. The author paints a poetic picture with his words that leaves nothing to the imagination. You will not see romance and sparkling vampires. You will, however, taste the hunger, blood lust and horror of the new image of the vampire. You will encounter cruelty in its most basic form.

The author takes you back and forth in time starting with our introduction of Zack where our story begins. Gradually, we are introduced to some of the worlds most powerful vampires and demons and how they came into being. All along you are painted an artistic picture with words, that leaves no doubt in your mind, that there are horrors beyond the human psyche. To quote the author, "This is the vampire redefined in the way we all wished it to be." If you are a fan of dark fiction, I highly recommend this book.

Jaz is smart and not popular. Her best friend is a girl four years older that works at the same coffee shop as Jaz. Her other friend is a girl who just moved to the area and is a lesbian. Jaz has been a bit of an outcast since she was younger. She is biracial and the small town she lives in frowns upon her kind. Her grandparents raised her from the beginning. She was able to tell her grandfather anything and now he is gone too. She is like a fish out of water. The only thing that keeps her sane is her guitar and her music.

Jaz just doesn't communicate well with other people; but on impulse she goes to a party. She wanders around and runs across something she wished she hadn't seen. Why did she go to the party? She wouldn't have seen it. She wouldn't have let Jackson drive her home and she wouldn't be falling for a guy from reform school. She could just pretend everything was normal again. She wouldn't have to keep a secret from her mom. A secret that would surely blow her family apart.

This is a wonderful YA book that takes in some very complicated issues. Jaz is a seventeen year old who tries to act so grown up but remains very immature. Her mother is dating a man who is much younger and not much older then Jaz herself. The author takes the reader on a roller coaster ride through the life of a teenager who has been fighting prejudice her entire life. Sadly, some of the things she accuses other people of, she does herself. I won't go into specifics because I don't want to ruin the story for you. If you are interested in a good story with alot of emotional conflict, I highly recommend this book. My one and only complaint is that there is some distinct similarities between this story and I'm Not Her. This is no way takes away from the fact it is a great story. If not for this fact, I would have given it a 5 star rating.

It is my pleasure to introduce YA fiction author, Janet Gurtler to my blog today. Janet is the author of I'm Not Her which I reviewed last week and If I Tell which I will review and post later today. Help me welcome Janet today.

1-Tell us a little bit about your newest release, If I Tell.

If I Tell is a story about a girl forced to keep a terrible secret or risk ruining her mom’s life. Ultimately it’s a journey of self- discovery, finding out who you are and looking beyond the surface of who others appear to be. Me. I’m just Janet. J I like to write stuff.

2-What was the inspiration for this book?

This book started with the idea of a rather repressed biracial girl struggling with who she is. And then her world blows up when she sees something she shouldn’t and her relationships alter and shift. Jaz is kind of the child I never had and things just rolled from there.

3-Do you plan to concentrate on writing for teens or do you write in other genres?

For now my focus is on Young Adult fiction. I just love writing and reading it so much that I don’t really have a desire to write for adults. But never say never. I am interested in writing in other genres, I’ve actually written some paranormal stories and we’ll see what happens with them.

4-I know you are being compared to Jodi Picoult. Did she have any influence on your writing?

I love Jodi Picoult’s intense characters and amazing plotting and wouldn’t dare compare myself to her caliber of writing. What I do think is that I like to write gritty stories and Jodi Picoult does this so incredibly well that I think she has influenced what I choose to write…contemporary stories that take things from real life and twist them around.

5-Do you strictly write for a living or are you like many authors who have a day job and write whenever they can?

Depends on the year. Lol! I usually work part time these days. Right now I’m not working but I’m looking for a part time sales or merchandising job. I like having a flexible schedule so I can work, write and get my son to and from school and swimming.

6-Have you always wanted to be a writer?

Yes. I don’t think it was a conscious desire for many years when I was supporting myself and working in the corporate culture, but it was always there, waiting for me to return to it.

7-Who is your biggest supporter?

Hmmm. My family. It’s hard sometimes for my husband to understand my compulsion to write and the huge cut in pay that went with it, since he is a businessperson. I was in a different career when we met and it’s kind of a new side to me. But he is very proud of me and my son is too and they mostly put up with me having a laptop attached to me most hours of the day and night.

This is a true story about a young, innocent, coloured, Catholic woman (Olga) who goes to England in 1939 to stay with her alcoholic aunt. Her intent is to remain there for six months; but war and circumstances prevent her from returning to her home and family in Jamaica. The story begins around 1900 and spans approximately fifty years.

   The book starts with a brief history of Jamaica. There is just enough history given so the reader knows what is happening and why; but does not smother you with so much it is boring. The major portion of the book is done in a diary format with entries by Olga's Aunt Lucy, her mother Becky and Olga herself. The entries were very well done and each one flowed nicely into the next. There were also pictures scattered throughout the book which I found quite effective in bringing the story to life.
   The story line was never dull. The history of this family and how they evolved was quite amazing. You have interracial marriage in a time and place where it just wasn't done. There is murder, voodoo, racial prejudice not only by the whites; but also those of color. This is only the beginning. You will have to read the book for yourself because I don't want to give away the story.
    I wish to thank Marie Campbell, (Marie-Therese Browne), for asking me to read and review her book. I must also thank Carol Bridgestock for giving my name to Marie and recommending me. I only hope I will have done the book justice. I have to say that this is not my usual type of read. I generally go for "no brainer" reads. I read for fun and enjoyment and don't want to think about what I am reading. This book pulled me in from the very start. I could not put it down. I got completely caught up in the history of this family. Even though I kind of knew where the story was headed, I was still thrown a little off guard at the end. This book can easily be read in one sitting and I highly recommend it.
    I obtained my copy from Smashwords for free in an eBook form for my kindle. It is also available in other formats on the same site. It can also be found on LuLu.com in paperback and PDF format.

Her father spends more and more time at the university, playing golf and retreating into his shell of oblivion. The worst scenario for Kristina takes place and Tess has to hold the family together. If she doesn't, who will?

Janet Gurtler is being compared to Jodi Picoult with YA fiction. True or not? That is for you to decide. Either way, the author paints a wonderful story of family struggle, pain, sisterhood and friendship that will keep readers engrossed until the end. Young and old alike will not be able to put this book down without sheding some tears of pain and frustration. The love between the sisters is quite evident even with the differences that are more then obvious. Your frustrations will mount with the parents of these young girls as they try to cope with the turmoil of their lives. See what it means for a true friendship between a young man and a critically ill young woman. I highly recommend this debut novel to anyone who just loves a wonderful story.

In amidst the turmoil, will Sophie's Christmas wish come true?

This is a wonderful historical romance. The storyline is well developed and flows smoothly from the beginning to the end. Sophie is a delightfully charming woman who is straight forward and innocent in her dealings with Vim. She is described as being level headed, consequently no one in the family thinks she will do anything untoward. Vim steels his heart because he doesn't want to leave himself vulnerable again. The big question, can he can save his heart from Sophie and "Lord Baby." The story is humorous and makes for a wonderful holiday read. I highly recommend this book to historical fiction fans, as well as, anyone looking for a good read. Curl up with a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy the ride with Sophie, Vim and "Lord Baby." You won't be disappointed.

This is the first book in the young adult paranormal series, The Water Keepers. This is an absolutely fantastic read and one I could not put down. I was hooked from page one and read the book in one sitting. The storyline is fantastic and flows smoothly from the beginning. It ends in such a way that you know you have to read the next one because you want to know what is going to happen. The characters are very well developed. You fall in love with the handsome stranger from the start. Sadie, is another story. Even though you know her problem is related to her condition, I loved and hated her at the same time. The ending totally took me by surprise and I absolutely know I must read the next book in the series.

All of you young adult and paranormal fans really must check out this book. I don't think you will be disappointed. Even if you just like a good story, I highly recommend this book.

Beau is an up and coming rising star in the technology company that he works for. His friends are amazed and a little bewildered over the speed in which he is rising. His co-workers notice some unusual things about Beau. Sometimes his personality is a bit off and at other times he looks like he hasn't slept in days.

Lucy is from England and is having difficulty adjusting to the weather in Seattle. She suddenly develops migraine headaches that she is attributing to something in Seattle because she never had them before. In amidst the migraine issues, Lucy tries to develop a relationship with a young man named Ben. The relationship between the two is growing nicely until Ben suddenly disappears. Lucy happens to be roommates with Sabrina, who works at Beau's company also. Enter Beau into Lucy's life.

Honestly, I did not know what to make of this story until I was half way through the book. I vacillated between disliking the book and liking it. Paul Dorset has such a way with his storyline and characters that you don't know what to think. I am certainly glad I hung in there until the end. Now, I can't wait for the next installment to come out.

This is a paranormal at its finest. You have a large technology company who is run by a group called Anons who is a group of people comprised of special souls as you will. Freaks of nature with special skills. As in the case of Beau, a single kiss may mean your demise. The problem is, these talents if not controlled can be your undoing. Not to mention, they are addictive. Lucy's migraines at first, seem to be so out of place in the scheme of the story. But, are they really? How appropriate is this story, at this time? You have power, greed and ambition, love and death, all rolled into one story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. This story will have you asking for more by the time you reach the end. I for one, cannot wait until the second book in the Melrose series comes out.

Despite the lovely Miss Blair's attempt to the contrary, an attraction is developing between the two that both are hard pressed to deny.

This is a lovely Regency romance that sparkles with dialogue between the protagonist and a feisty, yet appealing heroine. The sexual tension that develops, all but leaps off the page. The storyline is quite amusing as the heroine tries her best to keep her secret while the tension mounts between her and the Earl. This is a witty and lighthearted read that will most definitely satisfy the historical romance lovers out there. Even if you are not into historical romance, you can't help but fall in love with the characters. I highly recommend this story to all.
